It could be curtains for Williamsburg's old-school diner that currently houses an offshoot of SoHo's La Esquina. New building applications unearthed by Brownstoner reveal plans to build a six-story building with retail and residential units at the diner's address at 225 Wythe Avenue.
The space had been home to several establishments since its original life as the Mountain View Diner Company in 1952, including its long run as a popular hipster diner called Relish. The space reopened as Cafe de La Esquina in 2011. Calls to the restaurant today went unanswered.
Rumor has it the new building will be replaced by a condo, with 10 apartments and 4,351 square feet of retail and commercial space. If they don't decide to relocate the structure entirely, perhaps it'll be incorporated into the new design. It's been done before.
