The Blue Ribbon team have expanded their empire yet again with the opening of the Blue Ribbon Beer Garden on the Lower East Side. The cheerful bar occupies the second story terrace inside the Thompson LES Hotel, which overlooks Allen Street, and has seating for about 60 with extra leg room for standing. The vibe is more beach club than beer garden, with colorful paper lanterns, cacti and even a ping pong table for some friendly competition. The west-facing view also means plenty of evening sunsets spent soaking up the rays and the suds.

Straying from the rote German-themed beer halls, BRBG channels America's Southern heritage with a menu of BBQ items ($15/plate) served with traditional sides like coleslaw and corn bread and, of course, plenty of suds to wash it all down. The brews are another departure from the head-sized mugs found at most other beer gardens around town. Beers are available in bottles and cans only, ranging in price from $7 (Gaffel Kolsh, Victory Prima Pils, Brooklyn IPA) to $12 (11 ounce Lepziger Gose and Duvel) to $23 (25 ounce Ommegang Abbey Ale and Saison Dupont). Carafes of wine ($10) and bottles of prosecco ($13) are also available should you desire them.

190 Allen Street, 2nd Floor; 212-466-0404. Open Monday to Friday 5 p.m. - 10 p.m.;
Saturday and Sunday 12 noon - 10 p.m.
