Sugar and Plumm, a bistro, bakery and chocolate shop that launched in Paramus, NJ, is set to open its new Upper West Side location tomorrow, despite vocal opposition from a few worried parents. One area man launched a website in an attempt to stop the sweet shop from opening, and the location (approximately two blocks from a playground) has already been vandalized with stickers warning the neighborhood about “Childhood Obesity,” “Tooth Decay,” “Juvenile Diabetes” and “Drunk Nannies.”
"I’ve talked to neighbors who are upset about the childhood obesity epidemic, and it’s at the crossroads of lots of schools — a lot of young people go by there,” David Schatsky, who created the website Stop Sugar and Plumm, told the Post earlier this month. But the bistro, which also has a wide number of savory items on the menu, is opening tomorrow, whether Upper West Siders like it or not. Here's a look at some of the delicacies that await within, summoning the helpless Children of the Upper West Side like a hypnotic Pied Piper playing a flute hollowed out of a sugar cane and coated in rich nougat. As you can see from these photos, resistance is futile.
According to the press release, the Sugar and Plumm menu features floats, sundaes, sorbets, waffles, crepes, and a signature milkshake menu featuring homemade ice cream creations such as The Waffle & Bacon Shake (Vanilla Ice Cream, Vermont Maple Syrup, Candied Bacon, Mini Waffle) and The Birthday Cake Shake (vanilla ice cream, yellow cake, and vanilla icing.) The bake shop menu, created by famed pastry chef Pichet Ong, includes handmade French macarons, pastries, cupcakes, brownies, cookies, scones, cake pops, European tarts, and custom cakes.
Parisian chocolatier Thierry Atlan is in charge of the in-house chocolate shop, selling all-natural housemade chocolates. And the savory menu, served seven days a week with brunch on weekends, includes house-smoked salmon adorned with crème fraiche, red onion and capers on a gluten-free, buckwheat crepe; as well as a 72 hour house-barbecued pulled Berkshire Pork and homemade waffles, with pickled onion slaw. The meats and fish in such dishes are all butchered, cured, and smoked in-house, and the sauces and condiments are proprietary and made fresh daily, also in-house.
“Sugar and Plumm is simply about happiness,” says creator Lamia Jacobs. “You feel it when you walk in, and hopefully you taste it in your first bite!" We give Schatsky about a week before he caves and comes in for a milkshake.
