A dessert shop devoted entirely to pudding is set to open in the East Village later this month (in the space formerly occupied by Marco Polo Cafe). It's simply called Puddin', and chef/owner Clio Goodman tells us she's just pudding the finishing touches on the place while waiting for the city to issue her one last permit. In the meantime, if these graphic photos leave you panting for pudding, she says she'd be happy to cater your holiday party.
When Puddin' opens, it will serve a variety of puddings made fresh daily, featuring all-natural ingredients. Goodman says everything is house made, from the sprinkles to the cakes to graham crackers, and toppings are optional. There will be chocolate putting, rice pudding, banana pudding, coffee pudding, butterscotch pudding, lemon pudding and other varieties to choose from, as well as fresh-baked cookies, cakes, Stumptown Coffee, Harney & Sons teas, and hot chocolate. A small 5 oz. Puddin' serving will cost $5.50, with a 12 oz. costing $8.50, and the price of the big boy 20 oz. pudding TBD.
Asked "Why pudding?," Goodman explains, "I was a private chef for a man who asked me to make him pudding, which I did. It was a chocolate butterscotch cup. He shared it with his coworkers, and they went ballistic. And I made it for my friends and they loved it too. So I told him we should just open up a pudding shop, and here we are! Pudding is so nostalgic; it brings a feeling of joy and a sense of calm."
