UPDATE BELOW The Midtown outpost of soup dumpling mecca Joe's Shanghai has been shut down by the Health Department. On an inspection on Tuesday, the DOH awarded the eatery with 70 violation points, seeing fit to shut it down until conditions could be corrected.
Citations included live roaches, food held at improper temperatures, unsanitized surfaces and more delectable nuggets one doesn't want to hear associated with food prep. A person who answered the phone at the restaurant this afternoon said they were closed "for kitchen repairs" and indicated they would definitely be closed today and tomorrow at least. She didn't know yet when they planned to get reinspected and open back up.
In the meantime, visit their other two locations in Chinatown and Flushing or find a new outlet for your dumpling consumption.
Update: The Health Department gave us the following statement: "Joe’s Shanghai was closed due to a public health hazard that could not be corrected at the time of the inspection. In this case, they had a severe roach infestation. They can request a reopening inspection as soon as they certify that the problem has been corrected."
