Over the summer, the smart folks behind Sleep No More decided to expand their hot little operation by opening up a rooftop bar and restaurant. Well, just because the weather's changingsupposed to change doesn't mean there's roof no more. Gallow Green, a verdant and sort of seductive oasis on the roof of the "McKittrick Hotel" just introduced a fall menu. And with a fire pit, a live old-timey jazz band, bowls of stiff punch, and a pile of vintage blankets, they're determined to keep the green going as long as possible.

The menu (below) falls into the category of "bar bites," with such options as Smoked Pork Meatballs with Paprika Tomato Sauce, Potted Peekytoe Crab with toast, Scotch Quail Eggs, a cheese plate and a charcuterie plate. But the main attraction, besides the romantically overgrown space itself, are the punch bowls, which come in two sizes to share. You may balk at the $50/$75 price tag, but they're pretty big and go a long way shared with a friend or two. At a recent press preview we tried the Sleep Bowmore Punch, made with Bowmore single malt, Madeira wine, orange curacao, Demerara-orange shrub, and nutmeg. We're don't really know half of what those things are, but mixed to together and sipped out of vintage cups, and you'll be sober no more (sorry).

Gallow Green is reservations-only at this point, and the entrance is located just down the block from the doors to Sleep No More. It opens at 5 p.m. nightly (4 p.m. on Sundays) and stays open late. If you go, an eccentric young woman who claims to reside in the hotel may approach you and ask for help planting something in the garden next to the railroad tracks on the roof. Just go with it—there's no extra charge and she probably won't bury your corpse under the rose bushes.
