Good news for fans of throwing elbows when shopping for produce: Fairway Market is coming to Kips Bay. The market will take over a 42,000 square foot space in a shopping plaza on 2nd Avenue and 30th Street formerly occupied by a Crunch Gym and Office Depot. Look for doors to open sometime in November, presumably just in time for the Thanksgiving rush. This marks the grocer's fourth Manhattan outpost including last year's Upper East Side opening, a location in Harlem and the flagship store on Broadway and 74th.
No details yet on special features like a cafe or a really cool streetcar, but with a pedestrian plaza just outside the doors we're keeping our fingers crossed for a nice outdoor cafe for a snack before catching a flick at the next door Loews. Barring any sticky fingered soccer moms frat boys, we have little doubt about the store's success in its new 'hood. Let's just hope there aren't any more unexpected surprises in tubs of hummus.
