The latest addition to Williamsburg's seemingly neverending roster of new bars arrives this week with the opening of richlane, a handsome new spot on an overlooked stretch of Union Street near McCarren Park. Don't expect many gimmicks to lure customers off the flashy Bedford Avenue drag, but do come prepared for handcrafted cocktails, local beers, and wine on tap (!) at this well-appointed if low-key neighborhood bar.
The space, named in honor of an Italian social club that once occupied the building, is owned by Michael Passalacqua, co-owner of Chelsea tapas favorite Tia Pol and Esther Montoro. All of the beers and wines are from New York state, with brews like Keegan Ale Hurricane Kitty and Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold on offer, plus the aforementioned wine on tap (one red, one white, they rotate seasonally). Liquor-wise, the menu is focused on smaller brands, which show up in cocktails ($10) like the Rich River (unfiltered Riverhouse rye, maple syrup, lemon juice and egg whites) and a hot Snap-liquor based punch with milk, honey, pear and cinnamon.
The team has plans to add bar snacks soon, but for now, you'll have to be content to admire the food-free vintage refrigerator from afar. In the meantime, grab a drink and try not to knock those wall-mounted desk lamps off their post.
