Sad news for fans of the dying downtown dive scene: East Village bar Heathers has shuttered, likely for good. Current owner Ray LeMoine told us today, "I can confirm we are closed and likely forever."
Heathers opened in 2005, catering mostly to a funky gay and lesbian neighborhood crowd. In 2011, owner Heather Millstone sold the bar to Ray LeMoine and Michael Herman, formerly of Bowery Beef and Hole Foods. The sale came after a lengthy scuffle over her SLA liquor license renewal and a number of noise complaints from neighors.
Just two years later, it looks like LeMoine and Herman are getting pushed out of the 13th Street space. They told Grub Street they were initially set to leave on December 1st of this year, but now the locks have reportedly been changed illegally and the bar is closed; LeMoine added that they are looking to relocate: "We have a few options on a new space and hope to settle that in the coming days," he said.
