Last month David Burke Kitchen, located on several levels of The James Hotel in SoHo, had a press dinner to show off their elevated outdoor dining areas. There's a lot to take in on on the restaurant's third floor roof, where you'll find a surprisingly serene oasis featuring a full bar, a chef's table, and a spacious dining area, which spills over onto three levels where you can also play croquet or drink cocktails in a cabana. But as appealing as these garden patios appear, they're still upstaged by Burke's desserts, which we're featuring here in all their whimsical food porn glory.
Burke's array of restaurants, with their ostentatiously playful presentations, are probably some of the most fun spots in the city to celebrate a birthday, especially now that Chuck E. Cheese has lost his edge. And the chef's imaginative approach shines most brightly on the dessert menu, where you can order a miniature Petit four oven stocked with mini red currant and mini blueberry pies, or a passion fruit creme egg Creme overflowing with sparkling "disco blueberries." And of course, there are Burke's signature Cheesecake lollipops, which come to the table arranged like branches of an edible tree in Willy Wonka's factory.
Click through on the photos for an intimate look at the desserts (hat tip to Pastry Chef Zac Young) and the garden, which is participating in Summer Restaurant week (lunch service only). And it's worth mentioning here that the restaurant's "Treehouse Bar" has a happy hour on weeknights from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
