The unstoppable restaurant opening machine known as Major Food Group (Carbone, Parm, Dirty French, etc.) have debuted their latest offering, Sadelle's, on West Broadway in SoHo. The powerhouse trio are trying on the Jewish deli model for size, offering bagels, smoked fish, and other appetizing options. Watch your back, Russ & Daughters!
There was a "small army of people behind the counter for the opening," reports Scott Lynch, who was on the scene for today's debut of the counter service section of the restaurant. Though there wasn't a crush of fans eager to get their hands on a fresh bagel, at one point the bagel oven conked out, putting a kink in the team's plan to roll out fresh bagels every 20 minutes. Guess it could have been worse. Bagels aside, the Nova and House Cured Salmon are already crowd pleasers; they also mix up fish salads like whitefish and tuna, all of which are served with bagels and all the fixings.
Spearheading the baking operation will be Melissa Weller, a Roberta's and Per Se vet who's been developing recipes for this endeavor for a year, according to Eater. Lynch finds a new favorite chocolate chip cookie out of Weller's oven, enjoying its "dense-chewiness."
Major Food Group's Adam Landsman tells us that the sit-down portion of the enormous space will open sometime next week, likely Wednesday or Thursday. Those looking to get their hands on some lox would be advised to head over tomorrow between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., as Sadelle's will be closed Saturday through Monday for Labor Day weekend. Those celebrating the High Holidays should also note that they're taking orders (see menu below) for catering options placed at least 48 hours in advance.
