Brooklyn Taco is one of the few purveyors of Mexican food in NYC than can stand up to the tidal wave of condescension unleashed by Californians when you insist we have good tacos. Until recently you had to go to the Lower East Side Essex Market to try them, but now the company's sporadic appearances at Williamsburg's Donna have been made permanent, seven days a week.
The menu varies, but you can usually count on finding our favorite vegetarian Guaco Taco available; it's made with chunky avocado, red onion, tomato, raw sweet corn, cheese, crema, and habanero sauce. Also try the hearty Kale & Potato taco, made with kale, potato, roasted poblano peppers, fresh sweet corn, cheese, crema, habanero sauce. The fish taco wasn't available earlier this week when we stopped by, but carnivores will be pleased with the Chipotle'd Chicken taco or the Braised Brisket taco. There's also a fine tamale made with black beans, Mexican oregano, cotija cheese "topped with amazement."
This being Donna, the cocktails are stellar. A great compliment to the Kale & Potato taco would be the spice-tempering False Start, consisting of Cana Brava Rum, Amontillado Sherry, Ginger, Cinnamon, Lime Juice. Donna also installed a frozen drink machine this week, and they're using it to make frozen versions of the popular Brancolada, a sweet & creamy little number made with Branca Menta, Appleton V/X Jamaican Rum, Coconut Cream, Pineapple and Orange Juice. It's an ideal summer beverage.
Most cocktails are $11, unless it's before 7 p.m., when all house cocktails are $8. (And you can always get a Narraganset on tap for $3.) Tacos are $4 a pop, but their substantial and, in our experience, impeccably fresh. For more, here's our review of the Manhattan location of Brooklyn Taco. The full drink menu is below.
