Bon Appetit's 11th Annual Restaurant Issue showcases several of Gothamist's favorite New York restaurants: Jack's Luxury Oyster Bar, Casa Mono, 'inoteca, Pampano, Per Se, The Flatiron Lounge, and Chikalicious.

RSVP, Gothamist's favorite section of the magazine, has a recipe for a fantastic local dessert, Chikalicious's Warm Chocolate Tart with Pink Peppercorn Ice Cream and Red Wine Sauce (anyone want to buy us an ice cream maker?), but no recipe for the oh-so-addictive Coconut Marshmallow petit fours. We'll have to write in!

2004_08_flatiron.jpgOther exciting recipes in this issue include the Flatiron Grill's Cherry Smash cocktail, (recipe here) and BLT Steak's "pillowy popovers big as a pig's foot and crowned by melted Gruyere."

Gothamist was initially intrigued, but ultimately bored by, Alan Richman's gastronomical tour (de force) of the Lower East Side, in which he emerges disappointed from 71 Clinton Fresh Food, WD-50, Schillers, Katz's, and Essex, and pans El Sombrero in favor of Cibao, (dutifully mentioning El Sombrero's take-out margaritas) and somehow simultaneously praises Teany while decrying the hipsterization of the neighborhood. He should have followed Cityrag's LES Food Tour! We're not saying he's not right about the restaurants he went to, just that there is good stuff to be found on the LES.

Other things Gothamist liked in this issue:

  • the new Kate Spade retro-cute serving pieces
  • the article about how to decorate your dining room to look like Spice Market (and Spice Market's recipe for Jasmine Rice Pudding with Passion Fruit)
  • Bill Grimes' wife Nancy's war stories from her years accompanying him to work as a restaurant critic.
