Ben & Jerry's loves a pop culture tie-in almost as much as they love a clever ice cream pun. To that end, the ice cream giant is debuting two new flavors today inspired by Saturday Night Live sketches and digital shorts in celebration of the show's 40th anniversary.

First up, Lazy Sunday, based on the now-classic Digital Short featuring Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell rapping philosophical about Magnolia Cupcakes, afternoon visits to the movie theater and the Chronic—what!—cles of Narnia. Befitting the references in the short, the vanilla cake batter ice cream contains chunks of yellow cupcake pieces and a chocolate frosting swirl. Despite the cupcake pieces being a bit gummy in the batch we sampled earlier this week, we're always pleased to see that—despite their corporate overlords—the ice cream company still embraces their stoner-esque roots. Still waiting on Dude Food though.

The better of the two flavors was inspired by the lesser of the two SNL moments: Kristin Wiig's irritating prankster school girl Gilly. Gilly's Catastrophic Crunch features chocolate and sweet cream ice creams flecked with caramel clusters, fudge-covered almonds (because she's nuts?) and a marshmallow swirl "as frantic and mischievous as the flavor's namesake." We didn't find anything particularly mischievous about the taste but it's a solid addition to the company's roster, with the crunch from the chocolatey almonds of particular note.

There won't be any fun pint packaging for these newbies as the flavors will only be available at Ben & Jerry's Scoop Shops, though portions can be packed to-go in addition to cones and scoops. The two new ice creams join fellow flavor Schweddy Balls as the company's special SNL tie-ins, with two other flavors linked to the late night sketch show set to debut later this year. Will it be Drunk Uncle's Tipsy Tirade? Bird Bible Saintly Scoops? If there's any way to work a Former Porn Stars nod, Ben & Jerry's would be the folks to do it.
