Police are investigating a possible hate crime in Astoria after a halal cart operator was pelted with eggs and Islamophobic messages earlier this week.

The unidentified attacker threw several eggs at food vender Farid el-Baghdadi, with one of the eggs wrapped with a note that read "F-ck Arab. F-ck Muslim," police said. The incident occurred just after midnight on Monday on Steinway Street near 25th Avenue.

The owner of Farid Grill said this has happened on three separate occasions over the past few weeks. "They use the 'F-for Arab,' and the first paper is 'Go back to your country,'" he told PIX11. "I'm scared."

He also told the outlet that he doesn't know why someone would be doing this to him, and is only looking for answers.

According to police statistics, hate crimes in New York City surged 106 percent this past March, compared to the same time last year.

Nationwide, a recent study from the Council of American-Islamic Relations found a 91 percent increase in anti-Muslim hate crimes during the first half of 2017 compared to the same time period last year.
