wined%20up.jpg In a city that has everything, there are always a few things that we can use more of. For starters, maybe one or two more cheese shops, an extra beer garden wouldn’t hurt and who wouldn’t like another Trader Joe’s? Just saying. The same rule applies to wine bars. Sure we have a bunch, but after a while, the circuit gets old. Luckily, we have a new stop to add to our list.

Wined Up, a wine bar just north of Union Square, is easy to miss. Located upstairs from the eclectic little eatery Punch (on Broadway between 20th and 21st), there are no loud signs or long lines to indicate its presence. However, that therein lies some of its appeal. The slick, modern Euro décor complete with leather stools, impressive wall-mounted wine rack and Riedel “O” wine glasses felt familiar. Reminiscent of Bar Veloce sprinkled with a touch of Bar Jamon. We had no trouble finding a seat at the bar or any of tables up front. We chose the bar because we don’t like to be that far away the alcohol.

The wine by the glass selection has some creative choices – the Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi from Italy ($10/glass), the Chasselas from Switzerland ($10/glass) and the Zweigelt from Austria ($12) are just a few examples. Of course if you don’t want to go that far there is a fine representation of Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Pinot Grigio.

Save room for a little nibble as well. The Mediterranean Platter with humus, tabbouleh and lentils with grilled flat bread is seasoned perfectly and the cheese selection is impressive and worthy of the wine list.

Perhaps, we have become a little spoiled, but It’s hard not to with places like these at our doorsteps. But it’s not like we don’t suffer, the line at the Shake Shack is case and point. Crap, now we want a burger.
