Those of us who still haven't kicked the sriracha crutch will have a new opportunity for tongue searing exploration now that a forthcoming hot sauce emporium has met its Kickstarter goal. Set to debut on April 18th on Wythe Avenue on the Williamsburg-Greenpoint border, Heatonist will bring a large selection of all-natural hot sauces to the neighborhood, with the added bonus of a knowledgeable hot sauce sommelier to help guide your palate.
In an interview with Greenpointers, the shop's proprietor Noah Chaimberg reveals plans for a multi-faceted enterprise that's part retail shop, part educational outlet and part party space. Up front, a retail shop selling around 150 varieties of liquid fire, none of which contain xanthan gum or capsaicin extracts. There'll be bottles from all over the country and world in smoky, sweet, salty and vinegary varieties.
Like their mustard forebears, the shop will have a hot sauce sommelier to help customer's pick out the perfect bottle. Out of store customers can use their specially-designed app to find a new hot sauce. "All of our team here put a lot of work into assessing and rating each sauce," Chaimberg explains. "So once people identify what they like the app should accurately guide them to a hot sauce they’ll love." Their tasting room—complete with a kitchen and a communal table—will also be used for education and visiting chefs, while a backyard garden will be space to grow their own chilies and host barbecues.
