Ice cream purveyor Van Leeuwen loves to treat us to cheap, sometimes free ice cream whenever they open a new store, which happens to be this Saturday with the debut of their South Street Seaport location. From 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the new scoop shop at 224 Front Street will offer $1 scoops of their core flavors, which include the black sesame, ash and chocolate cake combo, and a vanilla with strawberry crumble that's also vegan.
All the NYC shops—Greenpoint, Williamsburg, East Village and West Village—are currently offering late-summer flavors that include a Summer Cherry Crumble (packed with gluten-free brown sugar crumble); a vegan, refined sugar-free and paleo-friendly sugar, fudge and almond brittle; a gluten-free sweet corn, maple crumble and blueberry jam; and finally, Chocolate, Brownie, Cookie, Chocolate, a chocolate ice cream base with cookies, brownies, chocolate fudge, and chocolate chips.
The same design team (Carpenter and Mason) that designed the Greenpoint store, among others, was also tapped with transforming a former clothing store space into one for dribbling cones. The team also says there'll be pints to go, which should be good news for locals with bodega Ben & Jerry's fatigue.
Van Leeuwen isn't the only haute ice cream shop coming to the area. In March, DNAinfo reported that soft serve mavens Big Gay Ice Cream would also be joining the lineup of one of the Howard Hughes Corporation developments, of which there are many in the Seaport.
