You Can Save The Mermaid Parade This Saturday With Amanda Palmer

With precisely two weeks left and more than $73 grand in the bag, the Mermaid Parade Kickstarter is well on its way to meeting the ambitious $100,000 goal organizers say the event requires to continue.

To aid in the final push, a benefit featuring former Dresden Doll Amanda Palmer will be held at the Bowery Ballroom on Saturday, May 25 from 7 to 11 p.m. Tickets start at $25. Happily, mer-enthusiasts won't have to wait until the parade's expected date on June 22 to get their mer-fix: "I plan to dress appropriately and hopefully learn some mermaid-appropriate songs on the ukulele," Palmer said.

The money will flow directly to the coffers of parade organizers Coney Island USA, and director Dick Zigun seems optimistic—no, certain—that the goal will be met. “I’m freaking flabbergasted,” he said in a statement. “Would I bet money that there will be a Mermaid Parade? Send a bookie my way.”

Want to ensure that Coney Island's freakiest (OK, maybe not freakiest) tradition continues? Advance tickets to the show are available here, and you can donate to the Kickstarter here.
