Fans of football, beer commercials and aging pop stars who prefer to watch their entertainment on the web rather than on the boob tube—good news! NBC has announced that, for the first time, the biggest game in sports—something called the Super Bowl?— will be simulcast on this here World Wide Web (and also on Verizon phones). About time!
The news isn't too surprising—NBC already airs its Sunday Night Football games online and on Verizon phones—but it is a nice nod to the many people who have cut the cord but still like to participate in mass cultural events. Last year's game had a record audience of 111 million viewers watching from their cathode ray tubes and plasma screens.
This year's game—which our own Jets and Giants still have very slim chances of attending—is in Indianapolis on February 5. What we wonder is if NBC will try and charge even more for Super Bowl ads now that they'll be able to include a theoretical online audience bump to their Nielsen numbers...
