A whale was spotted swimming in the East River Saturday morning, right near Gracie Mansion according to the NYPD. Was the mammal in town to wish a happy new year to Mayor de Blasio... or to deliver a stern warning from nature to the city's most notorious enemy of all animals???

The NYPD tweeted a couple of pictures of the whale, who we're naming Gracie on account of it swimming near Gracie Mansion, and suggested that of course, even wildlife want to spend New Year's in New York City. There's been no indication so far of whether the whale is here to be a lame-o trying to catch a glimpse of Ryan Seacrest in Times Square or if it's going to go to a fun house party in Rockaway.

This is the second whale spotted in the city in the last two months. In November, a whale was seen swimming near Liberty Island. This also isn't the first out of the ordinary marine life to visit Gracie Mansion: Five years ago, a seal hung out and sunbathed on some East River rocks near the mayor's house.
