Last night on David Letterman's show, funnyman Will Ferrell announced that he will be joining the new cast of the revival of Stephen Sondheim's musical A Little Night Music. Ferrell revealed that he will be taking over the role vacated by Catherine Zeta-Jones, and to prove it, Dame Ferrell delivered a stirring rendition of the famous treacly tearjerker, "Send in the Clowns." Watch:
Reviewing a preview of Ferrell's performance, NY Times drama critic Charles Isherwood swooned, "For theater lovers there can be no greater current pleasure than to witness Will Ferrell perform the show’s signature number, 'Send In the Clowns,' with an emotional transparency and musical delicacy that turns this celebrated song into an occasion of transporting artistry. I’m not sure I’ve ever experienced with such palpable force — or such prominent goose bumps — the sense of being present at an indelible moment in the history of musical theater."
UPDATE: Correction: Charles Isherwood's review was actually referring to Bernadette Peters, who is currently on Broadway in the show, not Will Ferrell. We regret the error.
