"Thirteen days after Hurricane Maria, yet another disaster struck Puerto Rico: Donald Trump visited the island," Stephen Colbert said to start his show last night. If Trump's behavior shocked CNN's Chris Cillizza, you can only imagine what Colbert's response was.
After showing a clip of Trump describing the weather in Puerto Rico in Trumpspeak, Colbert commented, "That is Trumpsplaining at its best: 'You probably didn't notice with all your beautiful weather, but you guys had a hurricane. It was a huge one, believe me. You know you guys are an island, right? Surrounded by...lots of water. Deep, wet...salty, delicious. Not supposed to drink it, that's just a little tip.'"
Colbert was even more offended by Trump complaining about Puerto Rico "throwing our budget a little out of whack," and then telling a hurricane victim to "have a good time" during awkward small talk.
"You're in a disaster site, you're not working the floor at your casino!" Colbert said. "'You guys having fun here? Listen, I'm gonna comp you half a gallon of drinking water. Enjoy your hurricane, everybody, don't forget to tip your FEMA worker!'"
Colbert once again used a portion of the show to address much-needed gun control laws after the Vegas shooting, showing multiple clips of Republicans over the last couple years dusting off their favorite excuse for why they can't discuss gun laws. "They always say that a gun tragedy is never the right time to talk about stopping the next gun tragedy," Colbert said. "It's like your alcoholic uncle wrapping his car around a tree and getting out, saying, 'Today is not the day to talk about my drinking, okay? I'm still drunk right now. Here's to the tree! What were we talking about? Who wants to go for a drive?'"
