Yesterday, hundreds of people braced themselves in the cold weather to run into the even colder waters off Staten Island's South Shore. Why? Because they had raised $47,000 for the Special Olympics.

Participants said they were happy to battle the weather and shrinkage for a good cause in the Polar Plunge. They told the Staten Island Advance, "It was freezing, but it was really fun because we helped raise money" and "We all struggle in life, but some people struggle harder then others, so we figured we could do something."
