A counterpoint to the revelry of the St. Patrick's Day Parade is the contemplative Irish Hunger Memorial in Battery Park City. Designed by artist Brian Tolle and landscape artist Gail Wittwer-Laird, the memorial, which opened in 2002, incorporates an actual Irish cottage situated amid dozens of native Irish flora, stones from different Irish counties, and audio and texts about the Great Irish Famine of 1845-1852.
