And thus continues the sad tale of post-Sandy Statue of Liberty. First, officials said that Lady Liberty and Ellis Island would be closed "indefinitely"—and now they're confirming that neither will open at all in 2012.

Both Liberty and Ellis Islands were hard hit by Sandy last month, sustaining electrical outages, damaged docks, doors and windows, among other things. Officials say the statue itself is still doing okay, but will still need significant time for full restoration. Poor Lady Liberty spent a year undergoing renovations, and was set to open the Sunday before the storm hit.

But, luckily, things aren't totally dark for the Lady. Her torch and crown are still lit up at night, thanks to a generous private donation of generators and other electrical equipment made earlier this month.
