The Plug Awards are coming up next week (February 2nd @ Webster Hall). "What the hell are those?," you may be asking. Well, they're independent music awards celebrating "artists who live and flourish in the margins." And YOU can vote on everything from Album of the Year to Music Blog of the Year to Internet Radio Station of the Year. So vote now!
Langhorne Slim, Gang Gang Dance, Matisyahu (and more) will be on hand to present awards at the ceremony. Bands performing include: Celebration, Beans w/ the Holy F***k and The National. To top it all off the whole thing is hosted by our favorite funnyman Aziz Ansari!
If you want to make it an ALL DAY event, then skip out of work and attend an afternoon Indie Night School. Gothamist was on a panel for them once, so we know how informative these things can be! This one will be held on February 2nd from 1 to 6:30pm at Webster Hall (just prior to the awards). Speakers include:
- John Moore (Talent Buyer, Bowery Ballroom) - Johnny Beach (Talent Buyer, Mercury Lounge) - Sam Kinken (Talent Buyer, Irving Plaza) - Chris White (Talent Buyer, Warsaw/Avalon) - Doug DeFalco (Talent Buyer, Southpaw) - Yalan Papillons (Talent Buyer, Knitting Factory) - Sascha Lewis (President, Flavorpill) - Jeralyn Gerba (Editor, Daily Candy) - Syd Butler (Founder, French Kiss Records) - Lio Cerezo (Founder, Kanine Records) - Dan Koplowitz (Founder, Friendly Fire Recordings)
The event will cover everything from booking, music media and labels (ie: it's like Cliff's Notes for running a band in NYC). So get yourself educated, and maybe next year your band will be nominated for a Plug Award.
