When The Fresh isn't playing some hip venue in the Silver Lake region (that's LA's answer to Williamsburg), we're betting he's locked up in an artificially dark room somewhere just south of Hollywood Blvd surrounded by keyboards and guitars. A virtual mad scientist of musical standards, the Fresh isn't just a musician, he's a performer. An award winning one at that, just ask the Malibu Film Festival. To learn more about the Fresh check out his website, where you can download most of his songs. His debut east coast performance is Tuesday at the Gothamist show, so be sure to get there for his 8pm set (more details after the interview).
Let's get this out of the way, where did your band name originate?
It was the first thing I said when I got up on a Saturday.
You may be best known (on this coast at least) for a song about the Olsen twins turning 18. [We think the song is hilarious, by the way, but...] care to defend yourself to any who may have taken this the wrong way?
Teenage lust is an important issue that should be addressed more often, I'm upset Bush and Kerry stayed away from it. I like to think of this tune as a PSA for adults. The message is to not be obsessed with young twins if you're 41 because that's freaky. I'm doing this for the good of the people.
What is your first conscious memory of New York?
Buying a rasta-Bart shirt when I was ten. You can't find that kind of gold at home!
What is your favorite/least favorite memory involving New York?
Favorite memory is when all the New Yorkers threw out their Yankees hats and bowed down to the Red Sox. Wait, that was a dream. My least favorite memory of New York is leaving..tear,tear.
Um...what's LA like?
LA isn't really a city, it's more like a bunch of suburbs spread out filled with very intellegent people that know alot about everything. I found out a secret: if you don't look at them in their cars, they get really mad and jealous.
What are some differences in the LA music scene versus the NYC music scene?
NYC just hasn't caught up to LA. This weekend I saw Motley Crue at the Whiskey, Poison at the Roxy and tonight Diamond David Lee Roth at viper, apparently he's real up and coming.
Now its time for some fill-in-the-blank action:
