Today is the 14th anniversary of the death of Christopher Wallace, aka Biggie Smalls, aka The Notorious B.I.G. Biggie was killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles, in an unsolved case which was "reinvigorated" recently. While conspiracy theories abound as to who was behind the murder (was it the result of an East Coast/West Coast hip-hop rivalry? did Suge Knight call the hit?), friends, relatives and fans have taken to Twitter and other outlets to praise and remember the king of Bed-Stuy (revisit his first public rap duel here).
Diddy explained to radio station Power 105.1 why today is a celebration for fans of Biggie: "It goes off in New York City. Like tomorrow everywhere, all the stations especially here. It's gonna be going hard in the paint on Biggie and then at night it goes down. Even throughout the weekend so it's really great when you wake up on March 9 and you just hear all his records and how up to date they sound." Other celebs had stranger reactions: Lil Kim blamed the government for the death of her mentor/lover, Jadakiss reminisced about his partying, and Shaquille O'Neal said he felt guilty for not being there with his friend the night he was killed.
If you want to pour a 40 out for the man surrounded by other fans, there is a tribute to Biggie tonight at Santos Party House at 9 pm, presented by Junior M.A.F.I.A. and AllHipHop.com. And if weeknight parties aren't your thing, there's another celebration of the man this Saturday night at Ultraviolet in Park Slope.
