It's been less than a week since Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens was released on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital formats, but the High Jedi Council of Commerce at Disney has decided it's already time for another trip to a galaxy far, far away. You'd better lock your S-foils in attack position, because the first teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is here.
In just two minutes, the new clip covers quite a bit of ground. We meet our protagonist Felicity Jones (whose character name turns out to be Gin or Jynn or something), a rebel who might be even too feisty for the fledgling Rebel Alliance. Also in the trailer is familiar face Mon Mothma, whose task in Rogue One is to send Jones and a team of spies to recover plans for the first "that's no moon, that's a space station" Death Star—the one Luke blew up in Episode 4.
Striking a tone that's way, way more Inception than A New Hope, the teaser gives a deluge of smash cuts that reveal more of the Star Wars universe via snippets of Jynn/Gin's mission to acquire the plans that set up the old, beloved trilogy. There are new Stormtrooper uniforms! Old-school AT-ATs! A ninja character who may or may not be a Jedi! Explosions! Droids! Hand-to-hand combat! The thing explodes off the screen with the force of a thermal detonator.
Now that Disney has confirmed that we'll be getting about 100 new Star Wars-related films as time goes on, one might as well just sit back and enjoy the ride. So far, Rogue One looks gritty, hyperkinetic, and fantastic. It hits theaters on December 18th.
