Don't ever say an overabundance of screen time is ruining the brains of today's youth. Yesterday, 17-year-old Austin Wierschke—who says he has "abnormally fast thumbs"—won $50,000 in real cash money as the first place winner in a National Texting Competition held in Times Square. (16-year-old Queens resident, Kent Augustine, took home $10,000 for placing second.) The Wisconsin teen says he'll use the money towards his college education... it will join his other $50,000 that he won at last year's competition.
According to the NY Post, the competition tested three different skills, and none of them were "sexting"—they were speed, accuracy and dexterity, and Wierschke used an LG Optimus Zip phone with a QWERTY keyboard. We don't know what that means, but we would have killed it in this competition with a 220 Trimline rotary desk phone.
