My Own Private Fight Club? Earlier this week The Hollywood Reporter announced that no less an indie auteur than Gus Van Sant would be directing a movie staring Twilight heartthrob Taylor Lautner, based on a New Yorker story he had optioned. Curious, right? Now the Observer says the movie is actually based on a New York article. Specifically this one about those underground hipster boxing matches in which male models beat the crap out of each other.
The match actually makes lots of sense. It gives Lautner a reason to take off his clothes while pretending it is for art and not for his fanbase and it gives Van Sant—who even slipped some naked male flesh into his Columbine movie, Elephant—a chance to make a movie with lots of homoerotic subtext for a mainstream audience. Plus, it will give a new generation the thrill of watching a Tiger Beat pinup beaten to a bloody pulp, similar to the one we all got in Fight Club when Jordan Catalano Jared Leto got the shit kicked out of him.
The movie has yet to be announced, so it doesn't have a screenwriter attached yet, but the Hollywood Reporter says Van Sant wants to start filming in the first quarter of 2012. What we wonder is, will there be a fight that gets canceled because of too much media attention?
