Celebrity hubris or legitimate complaint? Formerly rabblerousing director Spike Lee has sued Viacom Inc. over TNN renaming itself to "Spike TV." Newsday reports that "Lee asked for an injunction against Viacom's use of the name Spike for TNN."
"I was extremely upset to see my name connected with a network when I had never given my consent to use my name," Lee said. Lee's court papers say that TNN's president, Albie Hecht, told the news media Spike is "a guy's name with specific personality traits that the public through media publications had come to associate with me _ irreverent, aggressive, unapologetically male, smart and contemporary."
While we like Spike's style in suing Viacom, it's pretty ridiculous. Does that mean I can stop wondering and starting suring Jennifer Lopez for subjecting me to "Jenny from the Block" references? But the name "Spike" for a TV channel, though...that's just plain stupid.
