Shakespeare & Co. will officially shutter its longstanding NoHo bookshop at the end of the month.
In April, the company announced that outpost—one of only two Shakespeare & Co.s left in the city—would close due to rising rents as soon as a suitable tenant could take over the Broadway space. There was some brief hope that locals could save the 30-year-old shop with a fundraiser, but today, a tipster noticed the location was hosting an "Everything Must Go!" sale, and an employee confirmed that they would be out at the end of August. The Shakespeare & Co location on the Upper East Side near Hunter College will remain open after this one shutters.
Right now, books and other merchandise are on sale at the Broadway store for 30 to 50 percent off. Go purchase some, and experience the soon-to-be-extinct joy of turning a real, paper pages. Goddamn you, tiny evil book robot. We all know what you're really doing here.
