2007_05_arts_bikepd.jpgWe're smack dab in the middle of Bike Month, and today the Bicycle Film Festival kicks off.

Tonight at the (solar powered) opening party, there's a bit of a change in the lineup as Mates of State had to cancel their performance. However Team Robespierre and Parts & Labor will be filling their shoes with help of last minute addition Dan Deacon. After that there's a dance party with Gang Gang Dance, the best part is these shows are free and open to everyone! Bikes rock, indeed. Check the site for more details. UPDATE: Because of tonight’s threat of thunderstorms, hail, and lightning, the Bicycle Film Festival events have all been moved to Studio B. Doors open at 8pm.

Spend some time this week getting your bike all shiny for this Saturday's Bike Parade (1pm, location TBA). Dress it up and make it fun (think Pee Wee's bike), it's encouraged! We hope that guy on the super tall bike we always see riding around is there. And if you happen to spot David Byrne's stolen bike, chase it down. After all, he'll be helping out with the New Yorker's Bike Forum later this year.

Of course, as a present to bikers during Bike Month, New York has received a bike park, so if you have some rugged wheels head up there and check out some trails. Otherwise, there are a ton of cool events going on throughout the rest of the month, check out the calendar here, we suggest hitting up the Why I Ride: The Art of Bicycling in New York exhibit (which the NYT's recently reviewed). Rather have some cold hard numbers? Here are some New York bike facts.
