Richard Sandler's photos of 1980s New York City are amongst the realest, and possibly because of that they're constantly revisited. We looked back at some of his black & whites in 2008 and again in 2010, which means we're overdue for another look back—click through for a deeper dive into his work.

These days, Sandler says New Yorkers are no longer good subjects: "There is nothing more boring, nothing more nondescript and vacant than a person on a cell phone walking down the street. They seem to be out of the game, people are walking around in bubbles."
