After being closed for renovations for a little under two years, East Village venue Webster Hall will be reopening this spring. Today, they announced the initial lineup of artists who will play there, including Patti Smith, Broken Social Scene, MGMT, Built To Spill, Sharon Van Etten, Big Thief, and more.

Housed in an 1886 building, the independently owned space (formerly known as The Ritz in the '80s and '90s) was purchased in 2017 by a joint venture between Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment (BSE) and AEG Presents, which previously purchased Bowery Presents. The group also runs such venues as Barclays Center and Terminal 5. The sale was estimated to be about $35 million (renovations cost well over $10 million as well).

When it closed down in August 2017, there were a lot of fears that there would be a name change to the venue ("Barclays Hall" or "Bowery Hall"), or that it would take until 2020 or later for the renovations to be completed, which thankfully proved to be for naught.

According to the Times, who got a peek inside the venue as work is happening, there is a revamped entryway (with three doors now); the Marlin Room, formerly its own tiny venue inside Webster, has been turned into a lounge; and there are new bathrooms and upgraded acoustics. But for the most part the old Webster Hall has been preserved: "Much of the idiosyncratic grandeur of the room was untouched, like its scalloped balconies, Art Deco wall designs and, above the stage, an old canvas painting of falling balloons."

"It has been an honor to undertake this project with AEG and The Bowery Presents, understanding how much Webster Hall means to the history of New York City and the music community," Brett Yormark, CEO of BSE Global, said in a statement. "Maintaining the integrity of this iconic venue has been of utmost priority throughout the entire renovation process, while ensuring that the enhancements modernize the venue for both the fans and the performers. It has been our intention to create a venue pipeline to our larger arenas and we are looking forward to the opportunities that Webster Hall will provide us."

After an opening night party taking place in late April, Patti Smith and Her Band will perform on May 1st. You can get more lineup and ticket information here.

We're sure we are in for some great shows there in the future—let's just hope there are not too many "unforgettable nights" as well:
