Radiohead's Jonny Greenwood will be making a rare New York City appearance in September to help bring his magnificent score to There Will Be Blood to life. Greenwood will be joined by over fifty members of the Worldless Music Orchestra, which will perform the entire score live as Paul Thomas Anderson's film unspools on a giant 50' screen at the lavish United Palace Theatre up in Washington Heights. This is really happening.

The score, which also includes music composed by Arvo Pärt and Brahms, will be performed twice, on September 19th and 20th. Greenwood will play the ondes martenot part in both performances. Tickets go on sale next Wednesday, May 14th, at 10 a.m., here's the link. Mark your calendar so nobody drinks your milkshake.

Greenwood has collaborated with the Worldess Music series before; in 2008 his orchestral work for strings, "Popcorn Superhet Receiver," was performed by the Wordless Music Orchestra at The Church of St. John the Apostle. We interviewed Greenwood at the time—it happened to be the same day that Radiohead's masterpiece In Rainbows was suddenly released online for free. Asked if composing was in any way therapeutic, Greenwood told us:

I don’t know, maybe that’s true. Maybe people writing lighter music are very angry, violent people. I don’t know, that’s interesting. Maybe Burt Bacharach writes stuff and then fights. I don’t know. For me it just feels like the orchestra is making sounds I really want to hear. That’s all I’m thinking about really. It’s such an amazing thing; I’m still a bit in awe of what orchestras can do and how much of an event it is. And then when they’re playing in a room… You can forget and think that CDs are enough and you sort of don’t need to see an orchestra play. But then once you’re actually at the performance you realize it’s so much more magical than a recording.
