The "Unusual MVA" yesterday afternoon involving racehorses on the Cross Bronx Expressway turned tragic. A 3-year-old gelding had kicked his hind leg through the trailer's floor while being transported from a stable in Ghent, NY to Belmont Park. Drivers noticed the horse's leg and got the trailer's driver to pull over.
Traffic was backed up when firefighters arrived to extricate the horse named Please Be Quick. Later, veterinarians determined that the injuries were very severe (an 11" gash on the leg and torn tendons) and euthanized the gelding. The Post reported that the horse had "won one of nine lifetime starts and finished in the money five times." The driver, who has been transporting horses for 25 years, said he "felt bad for the animal."
The other three horses being transported were uninjured, and the ASPCA is investigating the incident.
