Around one million people crowded into Times Square to celebrate the end of 2013 and the beginning of 2014. And it went really well, in spite of the pedestrian plaza!

It was incredibly cold (temperatures dropped into the 20s), but folks seemed to take the weather in stride—as well as the call of nature. Amber Woods, 14, told NBC New York, "We've got adult diapers. We're wearing them right now." And James Young, 30, said to the Daily News, "It’s been a long day without a toilet. It was definitely worth the wait. I’m excited for 2014 and what the New Year will bring."

Why did people, from near and far, stand in the crowds, even though they couldn't feel their extremities? Brad Milburn explained, "It’s kind of on my bucket list — that’s why we we’re here."

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor pressed the button for the Times Square ball to drop. Musical performers during the run-up included Miley Cyrus in a gold, spangly cropped top and leggings, topped with a big fur coat, and Macklemore, who wore a big spirit blanket.

Happy New Year!
