New York City will celebrate the new year once the famous Times Square Ball makes its descent. Photographer Sam Horine was on hand to check out the ball and other Times Square festivities prep over the weekend, prior to the big night.
The ball, which is really a geodesic sphere, is 12 feet wide with 288 Waterford crystals and 32,256 Philips LUXEON LEDs. The ball is also very energy efficient—it only needs 22 watts of power, the same amount of energy per hour as it takes to operate just two traditional home ovens. And one more fun fact: "The LED lighting in the Ball has a rated average life of 30,000 hours, compared to the roughly 1,000 hour life span of previous incandescent and halogen solutions. This is especially important as the Ball is now lit year-round."
