For a few hours yesterday afternoon, Union Square was transformed into a phantasmagoria of bubbles as hundreds of people participated in the annual Bubble Battle. It was a chaotic scene punctuated only by bursts of diaphanous membranes made up of soapy water (and the laughter of children).

There were bubble guns distributed all around the park for the event, which was sponsored by dating app Happn. Loosely based on the Dr. Seuss classic "The Butter Battle Book," the event bills itself as an effort to "help NYC singles meet and emerge, like Glenda the Good Witch, from their 'dating bubbles.'"

However, according to photographer Gretchen Robinette, it was a fun and joyous scene for people of all ages: "Everyone was blowing bubbles and having playful bubble gun fights, lots of kids having a good time, and everyone in a happy mood and getting soapy."
