The big Macy's fireworks show, which returns to the East River this year, starts at 9:20 p.m., but people have been staking out spots along the waterfront all afternoon. Despite the rainy weather, here's how things looked around 4 p.m. today in Brooklyn Bridge Park, and on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade—those areas will provide some of the best viewing spots for the event. There will be three barges in the river in front of that area. The show, which will set off 40,000 pyrotechnic shells and effects, lasts 25 minutes.

A few notes: The NYPD, and their canines, are out in full force (we spotted about 30 in a five minute span)—so don't think about bringing your beers... or chairs. And here are the areas that are now closed off. This isn't the only area where you'll be able to view from—here's a list of some of the best spots around town (and there will be a livestream here if you want to stay in... like Thong Guy, who was nowhere to be seen).

We'll have more photos of the scene, and the show, coming up this weekend.
