It's the Party of the Year! Tonight is the Metropolitan Museum of Art's big gala—known as the Met Gala—to raise money for the Costume Institute. This year's exhibit is celebrating American couturier Charles James, whose structured gowns define elegances. Maybe that's why the Gala's co-chair, Vogue editor Anna Wintour, had demanded that the male attendees wear tails.
Many of the women wore dresses that paid homage to James and his intricate tailoring, like Dita von Teese in Zac Posen and Taylor Swift in Oscar de la Renta. However, some decided to march to their own drummer: Lupita Nyong'o wore a flapper-esque Prada dress with a net over it while Kristen Stewart actually cracked a smile in a punkish Chanel gown.
Vogue cover couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West went classic, with Kardashian in a traditional strapless gown (with a high slit) and West in tails. A far cry from last year!
Anyway, the Met Gala isn't just for celebrities—it's also for the second most powerful person in the city, City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito!
