Our local beaches officially opened for the season this weekend with an intriguing new attraction at Jacob Riis Park (which is operated by the National Park Service): The Riis Park Beach Bazaar, a spinoff of the now-defunct Brooklyn Night Bazaar, brought instantly popular new food concessions to the beach, along with live music and some quirky arts and crafts.
Photographer Clay Williams hit the beaches on Sunday, and reports that the biggest hit of the day was likely the fried chicken waffle cone from Brooklyn Star, which sold out in hours. And a happy vendor selling flower crowns said she made her month's rent in just one day selling her handiwork at Riis.
Williams also checked out the beach at nearby Fort Tilden, where the scene was more subdued, likely due to the mild weather and strong winds. Expect things to pick up as the heat cranks up this summer—here's our guide to local beaches that has everything you need to know.
