The 31 Days of Halloween are well underway, and last night magazine Electric Literature threw its costumed writer's cap into the ring with a lit-themed soiree at the Ace Hotel. The event, dubbed the Genre Ball, encouraged attendees to dress up as their favorite literary genre or trope, or genre mashup— and just like that, the Ace turned into a room full of Elizabeth Bennetts and zombies.

Photographer Tod Seelie was on hand to capture some of the magic, noting that the Electric Lit gang had a make-up artist on hand to zombify all the literary figures on-hand. Authors Michael Cunningham, Mary Gaitskill, and Lev Grossman judged a costume contest, declaring one woman dressed as a phrenology bust the winner—she won a free night's stay at the Ace.
