Back in February, when we were still under a blanket of snow, we caught word of a surfing competition making its way to New York... and now, it has arrived, brahs. Long Beach is transforming itself into a new stop on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour, and this week photographer Timothy Schenck spotted the construction of NY's own Surf City. Looks like it will include shipping containers, tents, stages, ramps, and tracks; Schenck noted, "this is the biggest thing to come to town since the Atlantic Ocean."
Surf's up (hopefully) from September 1st to the 15th, and for those not into the sport aspect, there will also be skateboarding, and performances from Interpol and the Flaming Lips, amongst others. Below, some New Yorkers insist there is no surfing in New York:
