The Metropolitan Opera House was evacuated this afternoon after an audience member sprinkled an unidentified powdered substance into the orchestra pit.

According to ABC 7, the FDNY responded to reports of a suspicious substance shortly after 5:20 p.m. during a performance of Guillaume Tell. An NYPD spokesperson told Gothamist that an audience member jumped on stage and sprinkled the powder into the orchestra pit before fleeing the scene. The incident is currently under investigation.
Before the evacuation, the Met canceled the remainder of the performance during the show's second intermission and told the audience there was a technical issue. There have not been any reported injuries.
