Wouldn't it be funny, Mayor Bloomberg and his girlfriend Diana Taylor, and Ice-T and wife Coco, enjoying a meal out? Alas, it's just a fantasy inspired by the Mayor's and the rapper-actor's appearance announcing that VH1 Save the Music and Time Warner Cable had donated $1 million of musical instruments to NYC public schools. Studies have shown that music education can positively impact children's lives, which raised some questions about the Mayor's musical abilities:
Reporter: Did you ever try to play a musical instrument, which one was it, and what was your success?
Mayor: Piano lessons, one year, loved the lesson, disliked practice, and showed no native ability whatsoever. I can still play a scale with both hands but only if I try it a few times.
Good to know! And Ice-T was on hand because the Mayor was reminding everyone about Hip Hop Week, leading up to the VH1 Hip Hip Honors broadcast next week. Earlier this year, when the Mayor announced the event (he called City Hall his "crib"), Ice-T gave his thoughts about Hizzoner:
“My people said Bloomberg’s cool. On the street, I think that’s the highest accolade he could ever achieve. When we showed up and I met him, I felt it too. You can feel it when you touch a playa’s hand.”
Mayor Bloomberg: Officially a playa.
There are many events, exhibits, and restaurants discounts associated with Hip Hop Week. For instance, at the Museum of the City of New York's Black Style Now exhibit, there's a discussion about the image of black women and girls in hip hop media tomorrow. Also tomorrow, a special tour and demonstration at 5 Pointz with Meres and Nic 1. Learn more here.
