The latest Big Thing coming to the gorgeous, cavernous Park Avenue Armory is part visual art, part performance art, and all based around artist Marina Abramović. And in classic Abramović style, there's a celebrity involved: Willem Dafoe. Starting this Thursday, The Life and Death of Marina Abramović will be staged through December 21st, and here's what to expect:
"At the intersection of theater, opera and visual art, director Robert Wilson’s reimagining of performance artist Marina Abramović’s extraordinary life and work begins with her difficult childhood in former Yugoslavia, and chronicles her journey to the present day. Abramović, who plays herself as well as her imposing mother, is joined by world-renowned actor Willem Dafoe and singer Antony, performing original music and songs created for this ‘quasi opera.'"
Wilson has created staging that "uses the full sweep of the Wade Thompson Drill Hall to draw the audience in as though they are part of the story," so it will be a little different from his past productions:
Tickets are still on sale for the 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st, but are selling out fast.
